What to Look for in a Monitor: The 10 Specs That Matter
Short answer: start with what you will use the monitor for, then check pixel density (size and resolution together), panel type, refresh rate, real HDR capability, ports and USB-C wattage, coating, and ergonomics, in that order.
Ignore dynamic contrast ratios, unexplained "1ms" claims and DisplayHDR 400 badges. They rarely tell you how the screen will look.
A monitor spec sheet lists thirty or forty numbers, and they do not carry equal weight. Some change what you see every minute you use the screen. Others exist mainly to fill the box.
This checklist puts them in order of impact. Where it helps, each item includes how the spec is distributed across a catalog of 5,881 monitors, so you know whether you are asking for something common or something rare.
1. Your use case
Everything else depends on this. A monitor that is excellent for competitive shooters can be a poor choice for photo editing, and the reverse is also true. Write down the one or two things you will do most, because they decide which of the next nine items to prioritize.

2. Pixel density, not just resolution
Resolution only means something relative to screen size. The number that decides how sharp text and images look is pixel density, measured in pixels per inch (PPI). Here is what the most common size and resolution combinations work out to:

The row worth noticing is 27 inch 1080p. It is one of the most common combinations in the catalog, and at 81.6 PPI it is the least sharp. If you only check one spec on this list, check that one.
Across the whole catalog, 51.9 percent of monitors are 1080p, 21.9 percent are 1440p class, and 15.6 percent are 4K or higher.
3. Panel type
Panel technology sets limits that settings cannot fix. The short version:
- IPS: accurate color and wide viewing angles, but about 1,000:1 native contrast, so blacks look grey in a dark room. 55.8 percent of the catalog.
- VA: roughly three times the contrast of IPS, with slower dark transitions that can smear in games. 23.8 percent.
- TN: fast and cheap, weakest color and viewing angles. 11.4 percent.
- OLED (QD-OLED and WOLED): every pixel lights itself, so contrast is effectively infinite and motion is extremely clear. Burn-in risk is managed rather than eliminated. 5.8 percent.
- Mini LED: an IPS or VA panel with hundreds or thousands of independently dimmed backlight zones. The brightest HDR option. 164 models, or 2.8 percent.

4. Refresh rate
Refresh rate is how many times per second the image updates. 60Hz is fine for office work. 120 to 165Hz makes scrolling and cursor movement noticeably smoother, even outside games. 240Hz and above mainly helps fast competitive games, and only if your graphics card can produce that many frames.
High refresh is less common than gaming coverage suggests. 59.9 percent of monitors in the catalog are under 100Hz, 24.3 percent sit between 144 and 239Hz, and 9.7 percent reach 240Hz or more.
5. Real HDR, not the HDR badge
This is where spec sheets mislead the most. A monitor can accept an HDR signal without being able to display HDR in any meaningful way.
VESA's DisplayHDR program is the most useful label, but its entry tier is weak. DisplayHDR 400 does not require local dimming, so the monitor cannot make one part of the image bright while keeping the rest dark. That is the whole point of HDR.
It is also by far the most common certification. Of the 646 DisplayHDR certified monitors in the catalog, 442 are DisplayHDR 400, which is 68 percent. And of the 1,489 monitors that list any HDR support, 932 fall in the lowest HDR brightness class.

6. Dimming zones, if it is Mini LED
A Mini LED backlight is only as precise as its zone count. More zones means less blooming, the halo that appears around bright objects on a dark background. Among Mini LED monitors with a published zone count, the median is 1,152 zones. Treat anything well under that with suspicion if you care about movies, and look for 2,000 or more if you watch in a dark room.
7. Ports and USB-C wattage
Check the ports against the devices you own today.
- USB-C with power delivery lets one cable carry video, data and laptop charging. 905 monitors in the catalog have USB-C, or 15.4 percent, but only 227 are flagged as high power delivery. Check the wattage: 65W suits most 13 and 14 inch laptops, 90W or more is safer for larger ones.
- HDMI 2.1 is what PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X need for 4K at 120Hz.
- DisplayPort is the standard PC connection. DisplayPort 2.1 matters at 4K 240Hz if you want to avoid compression.
- KVM lets one keyboard and mouse switch between two computers. 233 monitors have it, 4.0 percent, which makes it one of the rarest useful features.
8. Coating
Matte coatings diffuse reflections, which helps in bright rooms, at the cost of a slightly hazy image. Glossy coatings look sharper with deeper blacks, but show reflections. The market has barely moved toward glossy: 4,803 monitors are matte and 66 are glossy. If you want glossy, expect a very short list.
9. Aspect ratio and size
16:9 is the default, with 4,861 models. Ultrawide 21:9 and super ultrawide 32:9 together account for 535, and the taller 16:10 format, which many people prefer for documents and code, only 223. Measure your desk before going past 34 inches, since anything larger sits at the edge of your field of view at normal distance.
10. Ergonomics and mounting
A stand that adjusts for height, tilt and swivel prevents the neck strain that shows up months later. If the stand is poor, a VESA mount lets you replace it with an arm. 85.6 percent of monitors in the catalog support VESA mounting, so it is rarely the deciding factor, but check it on thin designer monitors, which are the usual exceptions.
Specs you can mostly ignore
- Dynamic contrast ratio. Figures like 100,000,000:1 compare the brightest and darkest the backlight can ever get, not what you see in one scene. Look at native or static contrast instead.
- "1ms" response time. Often measured with the most aggressive overdrive setting, which causes visible overshoot. Independent measured response times are far more useful.
- HDR10 on its own. It describes the signal format, not the display's ability.
- DisplayHDR 400. See item 5.
- Color count. "1.07 billion colors" usually means 8-bit with dithering, and tells you nothing about gamut coverage or accuracy.
