Short answer: the most reliable way to search monitors by spec is a monitor database, where every model is described with the same fields, so a filter for "4K, 144Hz, USB-C" means exactly that.
You can query some of these in plain language through ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity. Store filters work for a quick look, but they only cover one shop and often miss fields like dimming zones or USB-C wattage.
Reading "best monitor" lists is how most people shop, and it has one structural problem. A list covers five or ten models, picked by someone else, for someone else's priorities. There are thousands of monitors on the market, and the right one for you is often not on anyone's list.
Searching by spec flips that around. You state what you need and see everything that qualifies. Done well, it is faster than reading reviews and finds options that reviews never mention. Done badly, it quietly hides the best matches. This guide covers both.
What happens when you actually filter
Here is a realistic request: a monitor for working by day and gaming by night. We ran it against a catalog of 5,881 monitors, one requirement at a time.

Five sensible requirements, and 99.8 percent of the market is gone. That is the real case for searching by spec. The shortlist you need is small, and it is very unlikely to match a list written for a general audience.
It also shows where the pool collapses. Size removes half. Resolution removes three quarters of what remains. USB-C removes 76 percent of an already small group, which is the kind of thing you only discover by filtering.

The Mac search stands out. Across every size, only 29 monitors reach 200 PPI, the density where macOS looks as sharp as a built in Retina display. At 27 inches the pool is 15, and just four of those have USB-C. No roundup article will show you that the whole category fits on one hand.
Why store filters miss good monitors
Retailer and price comparison filters look like spec search, but they behave differently in ways that matter.
- Inconsistent labels. The same 2560x1440 resolution appears as 1440p, QHD, WQHD and sometimes 2K. Pick one checkbox and you lose the listings that used another.
- Missing fields hide monitors. If a listing leaves USB-C wattage or coating blank, filtering on that field removes the monitor, even if it qualifies.
- The fields you need are often absent. Dimming zone count, pixel density, subpixel layout and whether HDR is DisplayHDR 400 or 1000 are rarely filterable in a store.
- One shop's stock. A store shows what it sells, and the best match may simply be listed somewhere else.
- Ranking is not neutral. Sponsored and best selling items sort first, regardless of fit.
Stores are still the right place to check price and availability. They are just a poor place to discover what exists.
What a good spec search needs

- One vocabulary. A filter for 1440p should find every 2560x1440 monitor, whatever the box calls it.
- Pixel density as a filter. So you can ask for sharpness directly instead of guessing from resolution and size.
- Panel and backlight as separate filters. "Mini LED" is a backlight that sits behind an IPS or VA panel, so you should be able to ask for Mini LED IPS specifically.
- The details stores skip. Dimming zones, USB-C charging wattage, HDR tier and coating.
- Use case scores. After filtering, you need a sensible order. Sorting by a score for coding or HDR movies is far more useful than sorting by price or name.
Searching in plain language with an AI assistant
The newest way to run a spec search is to describe what you want in plain language and let an AI assistant do the filtering against a structured database. ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity can all do this when you give them the database's address.
It solves the two hardest parts of the manual process. The assistant turns "sharp enough for code, fast enough for games, one cable to my MacBook" into concrete filters: PPI, refresh rate and USB-C wattage. And when the result comes back empty, it can tell you which requirement to relax, rather than leaving you with "no results found".
The thing to avoid is asking an assistant with no data source. Without one, it falls back to whatever review articles it finds, and you are back to choosing between the same five monitors.

Seven rules for filtering without missing good options
- Start with the hardest constraint. Desk space, a console's HDMI 2.1 requirement, or a budget ceiling. Filters that cannot bend go first.
- Use ranges, not exact values. "27 inch" monitors are sold at 26.5, 27 and 27.9 inches. Ask for 26.5 to 28.
- Filter on pixel density rather than resolution when sharpness is what you care about.
- Filter on the tier, not the label. Ask for DisplayHDR 600 or higher, or 1,000+ dimming zones, not "HDR".
- Relax one requirement at a time. If you hit zero, drop the least important filter and see what comes back.
- Sort by fit after filtering. Use a score for your use case to order the shortlist.
- Verify the final two or three. Read or watch hands on reviews for the specific models. Now you know exactly which reviews to look for.
Method. Counts come from a catalog of 5,881 monitors queried on September 15, 2026. Each filter was applied in the order shown. Size ranges were 26.5 to 32.5 inches for 27 to 32, 26 to 28 for the 27 inch class, 31 to 33 for 32, and 23.8 to 25.5 for 24 to 25. We do not test hardware ourselves.
