How to Choose the Right Monitor for Your Needs
Short answer: choose by use case, because each one rewards different specs.
Gaming rewards refresh rate and OLED response. Office work and coding reward 4K at 27 to 32 inches. HDR movies reward Mini LED or OLED. Consoles need HDMI 2.1. Photo work needs wide color and high resolution.
Most monitor advice gives the same list of specs to everyone. That is why people end up paying for 360Hz when they write spreadsheets, or buying a sharp 4K office screen and then wondering why games feel sluggish.
We took a different route. Every monitor in a catalog of 5,881 carries a score from 0 to 100 for ten separate use cases. For each use case, we took the top ten percent and compared them with everything else. The specs that separate the two groups are the ones worth paying for. The ones that do not can safely be ignored.

Two patterns stand out. Gaming is decided by refresh rate and panel speed, and resolution hardly matters. Work is decided by resolution, and refresh rate hardly matters. Most people's needs sit somewhere between the two, which is why the 27 inch 4K high refresh monitor has become such a popular compromise.
Choosing a monitor for competitive gaming
Prioritize refresh rate first, panel response second, and resolution a distant third.
The top ten percent of monitors for competitive gaming have a median refresh rate of 240Hz, against 75Hz for the rest. Yet 17.1 percent of them are 4K, which is almost the same as the 15.4 percent of everything else. Resolution is not what makes a monitor good for fast games.
Panel type matters a great deal. QD-OLED averages 86.5 and WOLED 83.5, far ahead of VA at 38.3, TN at 37.3 and IPS at 31.4. OLED pixels change state almost instantly, so a 240Hz OLED looks clearer in motion than an LCD at the same refresh rate.
- Size: 24 to 27 inches, so the whole screen stays in view.
- Refresh rate: 240Hz minimum, 360Hz or more if your GPU can hold those frame rates.
- Panel: OLED if the budget allows, a fast IPS or TN if it does not.
- Skip: HDR tiers, color gamut, USB-C.
Choosing a monitor for HDR gaming
HDR gaming needs both halves: fast refresh and real HDR. The top ten percent share the 240Hz median with competitive monitors, and they are about twice as likely to be 4K as the rest (30.2 against 14.0 percent).
OLED leads again, with QD-OLED at 87.3 and WOLED at 86.6, and Mini LED follows at 73.1. The gap reflects motion clarity. Mini LED is brighter, but its LCD layer is slower.
Choosing a monitor for office work and coding
This is where the data is most one sided. For both use cases, 99.3 percent of the top ten percent are 4K or higher, against 6.3 percent of everything else. Their median pixel density is 137.7 PPI, compared with 91.8 PPI for the rest, and their median size is 32 inches.
That tells you what to buy: a 4K panel at 27 or 32 inches. The 27 inch version is sharper at 163 PPI. The 32 inch version gives more room at 138 PPI and usually needs less scaling.
Connectivity separates the groups too. USB-C appears on 47.9 percent of the top office monitors against 11.8 percent of the rest, and high wattage USB-C on 15.1 percent against 2.6. That matters if you work from a laptop and want one cable for video, data and charging.
Refresh rate matters less. The top group's median is 120Hz, pleasant for scrolling but not necessary. And panel type is secondary: IPS averages only 41.2 for coding across the whole catalog, but that is dragged down by thousands of older 1080p models, not by IPS itself. A 4K IPS monitor is still an excellent coding screen.
- Resolution: 4K. This is the single most important choice.
- Size: 27 inches for sharpness, 32 for space.
- Ports: USB-C with 65W or more if you use a laptop, and a KVM if you switch between two computers.
- Coating: matte for bright offices.
- Skip: 240Hz and above, HDR certifications.

Choosing a monitor for HDR movies
Mini LED averages the highest movie score of any backlight at 78.7, with WOLED at 75.8 and QD-OLED at 75.6 close behind. Standard IPS and VA monitors average about 36, less than half.
The top ten percent are also much more likely to be 4K: 53.5 percent against 11.4 percent of the rest. Their median refresh rate is 180Hz, which says more about how new they are than about movies needing high refresh.

Choosing a monitor for PS5 and Xbox Series X
HDMI 2.1 is the clearest dividing line of any use case. 25.6 percent of the top ten percent list HDMI 2.1, against 1.0 percent of the rest. 59.1 percent are 4K, and their median size is 32 inches, bigger than any other group because consoles are usually played from further back.
The pool is small. Only 130 monitors in the catalog combine HDMI 2.1, 4K and 120Hz or more, so if you game on a console, start from that list rather than from a general "best monitor" roundup.
Choosing a monitor for photo editing and content creation
Both reward resolution and wide color. For color work, 85.4 percent of the top group is 4K, and for content creation 91.9 percent. Mini LED leads color work at 74.3 and OLED follows at 69.5, largely because both deliver wide gamut coverage and strong contrast.
What the scores cannot fully capture is calibration. If your work is color critical, look for monitors with factory calibration reports and hardware calibration support, and treat those as requirements rather than extras.

Most people do. Rank your uses by hours per week, give the top one its must have specs, and use the second to break ties. Some common combinations:
