Tandem WOLED vs QD-OLED (Penta Tandem) in 2026
Short answer: both are tandem OLED now, so "tandem" is not what separates them. Tandem WOLED (LG Display) is a white light source with color filters. It reaches the highest peaks, up to 1,500 nits, and keeps blacks deeper with the lights on. QD-OLED Penta Tandem (Samsung Display) uses quantum dots. It shows brighter saturated color, and Samsung claims twice the lifespan of its previous panels.
For text, the subpixel layout matters more than the brand: pick an RGB stripe WOLED or a V-Stripe QD-OLED.

Is RGB stripe worth losing brightness for? The confusion is understandable, because the two manufacturers use overlapping words for different things.
This guide untangles the naming first, then compares the panels on the things you will notice.
Tandem is not the difference
A tandem OLED stacks several light emitting layers inside every pixel. Each layer contributes light, so the pixel can reach the same brightness with less current per layer, which means more brightness headroom and slower aging.
Both manufacturers do this. LG Display moved its WOLED monitor panels from three stacks to four in 2025 under the name Primary RGB Tandem, and in late 2025 grouped its TV and monitor panels under the Tandem WOLED brand. Samsung Display's QD-OLED has always been multi layer, and in February 2026 it branded its five layer structure Penta Tandem.
So the useful comparison is not tandem against QD-OLED. It is how each side makes color:
- WOLED produces white light and passes it through red, green and blue color filters. Most panels add a fourth, unfiltered white subpixel to boost brightness.
- QD-OLED produces blue based light and uses quantum dots to convert it into red and green. There is no white subpixel, so white is made by lighting all three colors.
Decoding the generation names
"4th gen WOLED" and "4th gen QD-OLED" sound like the same thing. They are unrelated counters from different companies, and Samsung Display stopped using generation numbers in 2025, so the QD-OLED numbers you see are press shorthand.

One caution on brightness. LG quotes peak brightness on a smaller window of the screen than Samsung does (1.5 percent against 3 percent), so the 1,500 against 1,300 nit comparison is approximate rather than exact.
Brightness: WOLED peaks higher, QD-OLED colors brighter
WOLED's white subpixel is the reason it reaches the highest peak numbers. It can produce white light without driving all three colored subpixels. The side effect is that very bright colors can look slightly washed out, because the white subpixel adds luminance without adding saturation.
QD-OLED has no white subpixel, so its bright colors stay saturated. That is what "color volume" refers to: how much color a panel keeps at high brightness rather than on a chart at low brightness. On paper both cover about 99 percent of DCI-P3. In bright, colorful HDR scenes, QD-OLED has traditionally looked more vivid.
RGB stripe Tandem WOLED vs RGWB WOLED
LG Display's RGB stripe panels are its answer to both of WOLED's traditional weaknesses: colored fringes on small text, and diluted color at high brightness. They remove the white subpixel entirely. The cost is brightness.

If you mostly read and write on the screen, the RGB stripe version is the better daily panel. If you mostly play HDR games in a dim room and want the brightest highlights, RGWB still wins on peak output.
Text clarity: layout beats brand
Windows ClearType assumes each pixel is a vertical red, green and blue stripe. Older WOLED layouts added a white subpixel ClearType does not know about, and older QD-OLED used a triangle arrangement. Both produced faint color fringes on small text.
2026 fixed this on both sides. LG's RGB stripe WOLED and Samsung's V-Stripe QD-OLED both line up red, green and blue in vertical columns. Samsung says V-Stripe improves the clarity of text edges for documents and coding. Pixel density still matters: a 27 inch 4K panel at about 163 PPI hides fringing far better than a 34 inch ultrawide at about 110.

Burn-in: no winner yet
Burn-in happens because OLED subpixels dim as they age, and static content ages some faster than others. Tandem construction helps on both sides by spreading the work across more layers. Samsung's claim of twice the lifespan for Penta Tandem is the only generation over generation figure either company has published for monitors.
What does not exist yet is independent long term testing of the 2026 panels. Older comparisons were run on first generation panels and do not tell you much about today's. The honest answer is that neither technology has been shown to resist burn-in better in 2026.

Two things to take from this. The gap is small everywhere, never more than about three points, so either panel type can be the right choice. And the largest gaps are in competitive gaming and coding, where subpixel layout and motion handling matter most. These averages span several panel generations, so a 2026 RGB stripe WOLED will do better on coding than the WOLED average suggests.

- Hyper Radiant Color is LG Electronics' branding for its 2026 OLED TVs, not an LG Display monitor panel.
